Often, the question with older or troublesome units is whether you should repair or replace the heating unit. Comfort and economy are two major factors to consider when making this decision.
Comfort: temperature, humidity, discomfort in some rooms (trouble staying cool or warm), big temperature swings, and safety.
Economy: warranty, utility overpay, inflation, age of equipment, today’s repair, future repair, reliability, and operating hours.
Heat Pump (Heat & AC Combined) 10-15 years
Gas Furnace – 15-20 years
Electric Furnace – 20-30 years
Oil Furnace – 30+ years
Ductless AC (Mini-Split) – 20 years
If you don’t know how old your heat pump is, you can locate this information on your outside unit. Typically the nameplate will be on the side of the unit that faces your house. The nameplate has the manufacturer’s specifications listed, including the manufacture date, often located at the top of the nameplate.
If you do not see a date on the nameplate, an online search by the brand, model number and serial number will provide you the manufacture date.
To find the age of your furnace, you first want to locate the serial number. An older furnace may have the serial number stamped directly on the fan itself. Once you find the serial number, look at the first four digits. The first 2 digits can be the week of the year that your unit was manufactured, with the third and fourth digits identifying the year. An example would be 0592, which would be the fifth week of 1992.
Now that you know the age of your heating system, you can make a better decision whether to repair or replace.
